DIY Activities: Young Children

Teaching young children the value and importance of money doesn't have to be difficult. Here are a few simple ideas to get you started.

Coin sorting
Your old jars of coins can be a great way to teach your children about denominations and monetary value.

  • Divide a piece of paper into 4 areas, or use a muffin tin with liners.
  • Encourage your kids to look at coins and group like items together.
  • Discuss each coin, how much it's worth and some basic facts.
  • Use the coins to add, subtract, or count by multiples.
  • Roll the coins to teach them how small change can add up!
  • Bonus tip: With a little vinegar and water, you can teach them how to clean your coins, too!

Chore Charts
Giving your children the experience of earning a dollar now will provide them with the tools to build a strong work ethic later in life.

  • Create a chart of chores that need to be done around your house
  • Give each chore a money reward with tougher chores being worth more than easier chores
  • Use stickers or markers to visually track their progress and give them a sense of pride

Your Wallet
Children are fascinated by their parents' and guardians' wallets, but they don't often understand them. You can have quite a bit of fun letting them explore your wallet! Let your kiddos look at the items and ask questions. Talking through cash, coin, cards, receipts, pictures, and any other items you might carry teaches them about the basics of every day finances and provides them with a little insight into your world.
